I'm glad to see this post. I've thinking about this before.

Every time a new logo appears in the market, there is one idea less to design, another idea/concept made or taken. So if you see it that way yes logos can be extinct but also every time a logo appears there are more possibilities for new logos for example the FedEx logo, first we got the standard logo, but later several variations came out of it. So in some way creating a logo, can create more logos in the long view.

But getting the concept might be a different story, because every time is more and more difficult to get original names for new businesses, sport teams, products, etc etc. How many teams are called 'Eagles', 'Tigers' etc...? The same with song names, how many songs are called 'I love you', 'without you', 'missing you'? There are a thousand teams and songs named like that. And it's just sad to see it happening on and on.

In some way the same happens with logos, everyday a logo concept is created and it's another creative restriction for future projects. And I believe we as designers should be aware of this and be socially responsible.

I think we need a world wide logo database.

Being in the web business, I find it amazing how many requests I get to "just create a logo". A scan of a business card doesn't cut it! It's one of the biggest mistakes small to mid-sized businesses make; to overlook the importance of design (I'm sure the larger companies do this as well). Oh, and the perceived value is way too low; they want a logo designed in 4 hrs or at fixed cost! Just subscribed to your feed recently. Love it! Thanks for sharing...

I agree as well. Logos are used to identify a company/brand. And they also make each brand unique.

I agree...I don't think logos will ever become extinct because they act as a shortcut in our mind, and today is all about shortcuts. It's a way to recognize what we're seeing.

If we see a laundry detergent with the tide logo, we're going to choose that over one that simply says "Tide" in unfamiliar lettering, all other things equal.
