LogoBlog Poll 16 - Will logos ever become extinct?

Logo is one the most important elements of the brand identity of any company. It is the image of a company’s service or its product. It is also the level of quality or the experience one had with a particular brand. In the ancient times, logo designs were merely used as initial letters to represent a person or place for use on stationary or signs. Later, their importance grew to such an extent that they were then used as trademarks by merchants and then became corporate identities for organizations in order to accomplish marketing, branding and identity goals in the market.

In the same regard, LogoBlog tested the fervor of its visitors and readers with a poll question recently. We asked our readers if logos will ever become extinct.

Will logos ever become extinct? Poll Result

According to the results, 12% of Logoblog visitors think that logos will get extinct in the future while 5% are uncertain. There is also a bunch of people (3% of total poll results) who had no idea about the question! (Welcome to the world of ignorance!)

Most importantly (and to my content…) 80% of the audience voted that logos will never become extinct. (Thank you very much!)

The results show that logos will never lose their value and significance in the coming time. Alongside the brand or entity’s name or in the exact form of it, there would always be an image in the name of a ‘logo’. Many cheers to the ever-evolving LOGO!

I agree…I don’t think logos will ever become extinct because they act as a shortcut in our mind, and today is all about shortcuts. It’s a way to recognize what we’re seeing.

If we see a laundry detergent with the tide logo, we’re going to choose that over one that simply says “Tide” in unfamiliar lettering, all other things equal.

I agree as well. Logos are used to identify a company/brand. And they also make each brand unique.

Being in the web business, I find it amazing how many requests I get to “just create a logo”. A scan of a business card doesn’t cut it! It’s one of the biggest mistakes small to mid-sized businesses make; to overlook the importance of design (I’m sure the larger companies do this as well). Oh, and the perceived value is way too low; they want a logo designed in 4 hrs or at fixed cost! Just subscribed to your feed recently. Love it! Thanks for sharing…

I’m glad to see this post. I’ve thinking about this before.

Every time a new logo appears in the market, there is one idea less to design, another idea/concept made or taken. So if you see it that way yes logos can be extinct but also every time a logo appears there are more possibilities for new logos for example the FedEx logo, first we got the standard logo, but later several variations came out of it. So in some way creating a logo, can create more logos in the long view.

But getting the concept might be a different story, because every time is more and more difficult to get original names for new businesses, sport teams, products, etc etc. How many teams are called ‘Eagles’, ‘Tigers’ etc…? The same with song names, how many songs are called ‘I love you’, ‘without you’, ‘missing you’? There are a thousand teams and songs named like that. And it’s just sad to see it happening on and on.

In some way the same happens with logos, everyday a logo concept is created and it’s another creative restriction for future projects. And I believe we as designers should be aware of this and be socially responsible.

I think we need a world wide logo database.
