People who enjoy specific products often display the logo of that product proudly on their desktop or laptop screen. They are even popular on ipods or other mp3 players that have the option for wallpaper displays. Its great for these companies since it is a form of free or low cost advertising. All they have to do is create a nice looking wallpaper and make it available online and it helps them build their brand through common recognition.

These are just a few that I found, but there are so many others available through a simple search. Apple and Windows have countless designs and there were just too many to add. It seems they were one of the few starters of this trend, but it certainly makes sense and is a great way to display a logo.
