Kellogg’s will begin testing the new laser technology first with corn flakes, and if the effort is successful, it will be extended to their other cereal types, which include Special K, bran flakes and so many more. Kellogg’s reports that 128 billion bowls of its corn flakes are eaten worldwide each year. That is a lot of cereal and it seems the company wants to reinforce that those consuming the cereal, know where it came from. With a cereal that is so iconic, I would think that there would be no doubt in anyone’s mind of what brand name owns the famous breakfast food.

The main reason for this extreme form of branding is because there’s been a high number of similarly-packaged Corn flakes knockoffs lately. I’m sure it’s tough to keep competition away when you have a cereal that has been so popular for so long, but is this really the right way to go about it? I don’t think I would want to eat cereal with tiny writing on it.

A recent case of a possible stolen logo identity is between the well known Australian super store Woolworth’s redesign and the ever so popular, Apple logo. The recent redesign of the Woolworth’s logo, which is a peeled apple in the shape of a “W,” has created a stir since it slightly resembles Apple’s famous icon. Apple has pleaded with the government agency in charge of Australian trademarks to deny Woolworth’s application for the logo change. The decision has not yet been made, but if Woolworths wins,  they will have the right to put the logo on all their products, even their electronics.

Is this really a case of theft or does Apple just want to trademark anything that has the do with the popular fruit? What do you think?

These are just a few that I found, but there are so many others available through a simple search. Apple and Windows have countless designs and there were just too many to add. It seems they were one of the few starters of this trend, but it certainly makes sense and is a great way to display a logo.

The main logo design for the Harry Potter series is a simple design with Harry’s name in bold, carved out lettering. It has a jagged look as if it were scratched into a piece of wood or embossed from a piece of wood or even gold. The highlight of the lettering is the lightning bolt shaped “P”, which resembles Harry’s scar. There are many variations on this, in which the lettering appears in gold or silver and sometimes with a background glow. The other versions no longer look like carvings, but like thick metal. They all have a very ominous feel so that we know there is trouble out there for our friend, Harry.

There are not that many other designs scattered through the current six Harry Potter movies, but I did find this interesting Hogwart’s Crest. The symbol represents the four houses that make up the school as a whole and can sometimes be seem displayed on articles of Harry’s clothing or uniforms.

Another famous image toward the later movies is the “dark mark,” displayed above. This is the symbol for the evil death eaters and the dark lord. I will not say his name. The symbol, a skull releasing a snake from its mouth, is tattooed on the arms of his followers and often appears in the sky when they are creating mayhem.

It’s amazing how much popularity a book series can stir up, but when something is good, it’s not long until word of mouth spreads it to the rest of the world. The series has been popular for over twelve years now and as a fan, I thoroughly enjoy both the books and the movies, although for anyone who only watches the movies, I would recommend some sit down reading time with each novel. It’s definitely worth it and there is always the hope that a new logo will come about for the next one!

“Ida,” is the little fossil that was recently found in Germany and is considered to be the “missing link.” The fossil is a huge find for those who study human origins. Paleontologist, Jorn Hurum, is responsible for leading the team and analyzed the 47-million-year-old fossil. He suggests Ida is a critical missing-link species in primate evolution. His studies show that the Ida fossil bridges the evolutionary split between higher primates such as monkeys, apes, and humans and their more distant relatives such as lemurs.

Ida, properly known as Darwinius masillae, has a very unique anatomy. The skeleton is mostly like a lemur, but features primate-like characteristics such as grasping hands, opposable thumbs, clawless digits with nails, and short limbs. After the announcement was made about the fossil’s discovery, it seems Google took advantage, using the fossil’s image for today’s Google logo.

Google has always been great with keeping up with current events and displaying what is going on through their logo art. It’s nice to see that they continue to do so by proudly including Ida in their design.

With advertising everywhere you look in Times Square, logos of all sizes are displayed proudly. It is the best place to look for the latest advertising, product packaging and of course logo designs. Where else can you see a 20 ft cup of noodles?
