Beyond Words: Do Logos Need Words to Market Themselves?

Some companies use their name as their logo such as Google, Yahoo!, Coca Cola, Sony or Fed Ex. All of these major businesses are known for their names, but there is a world of famous logos in which we all know what they are without the use of words.

Is it better to originally design a logo that doesn’t use words or is the combination of words and pictures more effective in marketing a business? Is a logo design somehow more powerful when it stands alone? One could argue that a memorable logo should stand alone without any adornment, as a silent testimonial to the work and creativity of the designer.

However should creativity trump practicality? What good is a professionally design logo if no one knows the company behind it?

Take a look at these famous, word free logos. They make a bold statement with an image alone and are ingrained in our minds from years of successful marketing. You will see some classics, like Nike, Windows, NBC, and Disney. Do you know their names because of their word free logos or their successful brands?

What do you think is a better style for a logo, with or without words?

Apple Wins Again: How Do You Like Dem Apples?

It appears that Apple just cannot be stopped, nor ripped off. The popular manufacturer behind the Mac, iPhone, and iPod has recently concluded litigation against a small Chinese computer company. Apparently the logo of New Apple Concept Digital Technology was too similar to that of the American Giant. In a settlement that granted Apple $58,000, the Chinese company was found in violation of trademarking laws.

The Apple logo has been a part of American technology for many, many years. And over those years it has seen many faces. With the coming of the iMac and Macbooks, Apple experimented with several different colors and shading, but always retained the same basic shape and feel. All of this sprouted from the logo that started it all. The “rainbow” like apple was a logo of a different time. I am torn however. My past tells me to embrace the simple and classic design principles that flow through the original design, but my obsession with clean, sleek, and futuristic design I lean towards the new.

If only Apple could throw a metallic rainbow into their new logo. This is one of the few instances where I really cannot decide which logo I like better. I cannot blame that small Chinese computer manufacturer for attempting to copy the Apple logo, it is a timeless classic.

The World’s Game: Football Club Logo Designs

Football, Fútbol, Soccer. Regardless of your native tongue, the “world’s game” is a source of history, competition, and champions. It is also a source of some of the more interesting styles of sports branding. Unlike many American sports clubs, European football teams take a more classic route when designing their logo.

Lacking colorful mascots, many of these clubs choose to brand their team with a crest. While different from the primarily illustrative logos of American teams, football clubs incorporate more history into their designs.

These designs are not necessarily flashy or cutting edge, but their attention to history, and meaningful symbolism create a sense of nostalgia often lost in modern branding. During the mid to late 1900’s many of these teams realized the potential fiscal opportunities present in the football industry and changed their logo designs. However, a recent trend has surfaced reconnecting the clubs with their roots.

It is common for these clubs to borrow components of their home city’s crest in combination with symbols unique to the club. Barcelona for instance is one of my favorite logos:

Notice the two upper panels of the logo. The left features St. George’s Cross while the right displays the colors of Catalonia. The bottom half of the logo includes the football clubs colors, as well as a graphic image of the ball. By including all of these components, the FC Barcelona logo displays a perfect balance between where the club came from, and what it stands for. I love the simple, clean cut look that this type of sports logo embraces. Not to mention cant ever hurt to be proud of where you came from.

Take a look at these other logos that represent their cities with pride. See if you notice anything they have in common.

And just for fun, some of the logos that just don’t do it for me :(

Do you have any suggestions for great Football Club design?
