- Recycling Logo, defined!
-
Recycling is a process in which useful materials are remanufactured into new products. It is estimated that 50% of an average household waste can be recycled. However, only 9% of that waste is actually recycled. If the remaining percentage of that waste is recycled and if recycled products are bought and used, there will be a drastic increase in energy savings and a cut down in the quantity of useful materials being wasted.
It is, thus, necessary to ensure that the products we use and buy can be recycled. In order to do that, a good way to identify recycled products is to look for the recycling logo known as the “mobius loop”. The mobius loop is the international symbol of recycling that consists of three chasing arrows, twisted to form a triangle. It can widely be seen on bins, drink cans, bottles, newspapers, etc. to signify that the products can be recycled. The mobius loop or the recycling logo is available in different types, which are often intermixed and misunderstood.
If the recycling logo is displayed on a dark background, it means that the product is manufactured by using recycled materials. It also guarantees that the product is made from 100 percent post-consumer waste (waste generated from households, commercial and institutional facilities, with no further propose).
Conversely, if the recycling logo appears on a light background, it means that the entire product is recyclable. This recycling logo also claims that more than thirty three percent (33%) of the population in the distribution area has easy access to collection and drop-off facilities to recycle the product. However, if the product fails to qualify this requirement, no such statement should be made.
Similarly, a recycling logo, which has a percentage sign (%) inside the mobius loop, denotes that the product is made up of a certain percentage, as mentioned, of recycling material(s). However, the use of this type of recycling logo is voluntary and is based on the discretion of the manufacturer. So the next time you go for your grocery shopping, be sure to buy products that are recycled as a part of being an environmentally friendly citizen. Remember: Reduce, Reuse and RECYCLE.
