10 Logo Design trend predictions – What to follow in 2010? |

With every coming year, distinctive and fresh trends are adopted in the field of logo design. Although logo designing does not necessitate rules and regulations, but style and trends are followed in every industry. A capable logo designer should identify current and existing trends which are in style and demand. However, it is not easy to categorize logo design trends from umpteen trends already prevailing in the industry. Logo design trends are very tricky to make out. Each passing year, trends come and go away like the seasons. Some logo designs become trend setters while other turn out to be trend smashers. After having analyzed the logo design trends in the first quarter of 2010, I have enlisted 10 of the most noticeable logo design trends. Although this is still a prediction as one can never be too sure about varying trends, but these are certainly the trends to look out for this year. |

I guess some really can be called trends, some are already here and have been for years. But IMHO, 3D logos can hardly become something really hot, even with evth going 3D nowadays…Even on this list, to my mind, 3D section bears one of the least attractive logos… Or maybe I’m just subjective, since I’m personally not into 3D logo designs.. I think that conceptual logo with pseudo 3D will rule and become a trend

Logo design trends are to be avoided; not followed. Be original. Set your client’s identity apart from others as a successful branding element. Why would a designer want their logo design effort to be instantly dated and resemble the work of so many others?

There is only “good” design and “bad” design. What is it with this fascination with “trends”? “Trends” go out of style – a good design (logo or otherwise) is timeless.

Nice logo designs

I think the handwritten signature type logos… they really only work well for business whose logo works as a constant brand (i.e. clothes, make up, perfumes – things that are bought to have the brands displayed, and this adds a personalized touch to them), for most businesses it would just be hard to read and unprofessional looking.
I like faux 3D logos; the ones that have the illusion of being 3D by using two colors or a certain angle for example – Since those would still work in gray scale.
I have to admit, those clever logos with hidden meanings always make me smile – There’s a sense of satisfaction when you get the ‘other’ picture in it! Those are my favorite.

What about animated logos? In Switzerland 1st phone operator Swisscom redesigned their official logo that way. Weird choice! http://www.swisscom.ch

Those in the graphic design community will know what styles are passe by instinct. However, clients obviously don’t view it that way.
Here is what it comes down to:
1) Give what the clients what they want.
or
2) Be the solid idealist and don’t accept business from them.

Um…a tree?

Although there are trends in design (web, print, logo and more), I think logos should be the ones most concentrated on making “trendless”. A logo which works for 50 years is far better than a logo which sticks with a trend and switches every six months. Of course you can use a trend, but be sure it can live beyond the trend.
Nice compilation of logos though, thanks for collecting!
(I know this is a compilation of predictions, but just thought to share.

To Jeff and Otto, Amen!
If it looks familiar, it’s probably been done to death. Unfortunately, clients will often choose the familiar, which is partial contribution to the same disconnected head swooshy figures, generic swooshes around wordmarks, and gradients to cover up bad design.
The only thing designers can do is try to redirect those clients, and maintain their own standards. Not always easy, but it does help the severe backslide in branding that has created the glut of sense-numbing logos.

Jeff Fisher is correct. A good logo stems from an original visual idea based on the brand concept. What you have here is not so much design trends, but ten very general style categories. A trend is something narrow that is rising now and will presumably be gone by next season. Conceptual logos and signature logos have been around for over a century!

Great designs. My only concern is some possible problems with printing and wearables. For example, how would the World Moto and Darien Library logos look embroidered on a polo?
I am still a huge fan of simple logo design such as Paula Scher’s Citi Bank logo…a strong concept and the perfect example of minimalism at its finest.

I would say there was no such thing as a logo trend; logos have been pushing boundaries and changing games thanks to great designers all over the world. I would agree more with the whole eco thing – but thats just because its an international topic which is current or ‘trendy’ in some respects (i.e jumping on the eco bandwagon). I think logos are probably the hardest design element to trend because its more about what’s right for the individual or company than what design style is current. Visual identities are meant to last a long while, if not a lifetime – just look at Apple or Nike for instance.
That’s just my take anyway.

I have to agree with some of the other comments here, the logo’s that display a 3D object just don’t seem to cut it for me. They always look amateurish IMHO.
I also believe logo’s are not designed within categories but people seem to place them in categories. Like the other people suggested, don’t focus on following a trend, make the design specific to the client and innovate to the best of your ability.

This is a great resource right here. Thanks so much for posting this.
IMO, I think that the trend is going to go back to a minimalistic approach when it comes to logo designs. Maybe if 3d is cut back to the hybrid form of design, where it blends 2d and 3d elements, will be the straight and narrow. Personally I love when an artist utilizes negative space, color, and lines.

The eye is a big thing in logo design too. It’s nicely done without being cliche.
