All these are good and I really try to ask these questions meaningfully of my clients whenever I start.
However, I think number 6 is a leading question the way that it’s worded. It comes off as sounding like “are you going to be one of the conformist sheep or are you actually gonna do something original?” which might seem stand-offish to a client. I always ask my clients about other logos and images that they find inspiring and worth referencing, but by no means would I feel like I was forcing myself to be uncreative and not have a voice in the design process. In fact I much more appreciate a strong starting point from my clients if they can provide me with an existing image or logo whose style and mood they wish to integrate into their design.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up nicely. There’s another question I’ve been asking almost systematically, and that is: Do you prefer typographic logos vs. graphical logos. I usually offer both in my research anyway, but it is nice to know when the clients stands on the subject.

I have a “sample logo” page with about 30 well designed logos on it. I ask them which logos & colors catch their eye and why. Not to copy these logos, but to garner their perspective on type vs graphic, vertical vs horizontal ect. Many clients need a visual reference to begin giving me creative direction. I NEVER ask them how much they are willing to spend! I have set pricing (from X to XX) depending on the number of variations and alterations we go through! This price also includes a mini style guide and ALL file types & color specifications on a disc for them. The whole package!

Thanks for the helpful list. Sometimes I ask my customers if they have a story that they’d like to tell with their logo. Even if it’s a very simple point, it still helps me to understand what they want.

I usually ask about what we can’t use?, for example specific colors or things like that. This is something that you might derive from your questions but it’s always better to be clear about it, and there is no danger in asking
.

@Jorge Avila…I liked this unique approach of yours asking about what we can’t use;)
@Kim Gilmore…liked your systematic and organised working style. Best of luck
@The Amazing Spider-Ads…it’s good you ask your clients to refer their inspirations but you are lucky if they don’t insist you to come up with something similar. Many clients does that which is awful.
