It is based on an ancient Chinese religion/philosophy/mysticism called the I - ching. The eight symbols around the circumference of the octagon are called trigrams. The logo even appears int product that the characters wear or use and consequently viewers can buy. It's all rather fun and in keeping with the comedy of the show.
