You are making some erroneous assumptions here. I use a designer for many projects and have used him for years. Sometimes the projects take a long time to get through because quite frankly I am very busy. I pay him on time and many times in advance, but sometimes I have to step away from a design project for a few weeks while I travel or work on another project. It doesn't mean I'm running away or losing interest or am trying to steal his work. If I had the time to work on the design projects full-time, I wouldn't have to hire someone. If my designer believed what you said, he'd have lost out on a lot of my business over the years.

Nice Posts. I always get this from my client. "This is not working for me anymore, let's drop it" and he did not reply to me anymore. So this is my fault or the client?

This is very true and so helpful, and there are many cases where either clients want to steal ideas or refuse to pay the remaining amount after project completes. I am looking forward to read your article on how to handle and avoid these situations.

The best route is to have a standard agreement, where you are paid when certain project design goals are satisfied. This is especially important when you are working on a large project.

This is an excellent post, and it functions well as "what-not-to-do" list for small business owners who are still learning how to hire and interact with contractors.

It's sad that this is an issue, but it speaks to the need for designer and client to agree on very clear terms before work is started so that there's some recourse if a client tries to pull a move likes this. Prevention is, after all, the best medicine.

Thanks for the post, in my experience the first real warning sign is when you ask him for a 50% deposit and he tells you to do the designs first and then he'll pay you the full amount. The other ones I avoid are those that tell you that they are going to give you so much business that you wont be able to handle it, but can you please give him a discount.....
