For well recognized powerhouses like Google and Yahoo, it's a clever idea. Their brand is too well known to be forgotten or confused so easily. Besides that, the "decorative" logo versions are only used in their online presence to the general public, not in business communications (signage, business cards), where the professional consistency is a must. The general public would definitely recognize and appreciate the human touch, and in Google's case, the opportunity to virtually "celebrate" both small and major events.

Agreed though that some of the seasonal decorations are a bit tacky (like adding a santa cap is a bit too simple and gimmicky), but I have found that Google's are always interesting in their rendering :)

Adapting your logo to the various holidays is a good idea, as long as your logo (identity) is solid and well known to the masses. These updated logos will be confusing to all the people who don't know the original logos.

I love how logos are changed for the seasons. Google is the master of it, but companies have been doing this for as long as I can remember. Not that Google needs the traffic, but I know that I'd visit the page normally just to see what neat stuff they've done with their logo lately. It keeps people interested. We live in an A.D.D. society - you can stay fresh or get stale.

This is a fun way to keep customers interested in your business. If done correctly by a professional logo artist your brand will retain its familiarity without confusing your customers. Google and Yahoo are prime examples of revamping logos for occations without confusing their audience. The benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Just remember to choose a logo artist with experience.

In my personal opinion, it is okay to change the logo to fit a popular occasion. It shows the website is:
1. still alive (although no update on the contents whatsoever)
2. aware of current events

It is however, important to do it just not-over-the top changes. :D

It is an advantage for a company to seal and put a logo in order for the client to recognize.

Its a huge undertaking to update or change a logo design. You need to consider a whole lot of things. It can be a great move, or it can be a burden.

I think it s a good idea, just like putting up the christmas lights, except this one doesn't increase your power bill.
