Revamping your logo design for occasions – Is it a wise choice?

Categories: Graphic Design, Logo Design Tips
Written By: Nora Reed

With the arrival of big festivals, world famous logos appear with new features to mark celebrations. Lately, while winding up my research work before leaving for Thanksgiving holidays, I noticed refurbished logo designs of famous brands on their sites/blogs.This is an old practice of brands updating their online place of business for the holidays. But the growing adaption of this trend makes me wonder if doing so is a wise decision or a confusing stunt.

However, it becomes more difficult to answer this question when we get to see our all time favorite “Google Logo” decorated with carved Pumpkins for Thanksgiving. Google, an unavoidable brand, follows this trend consistently by updating its logo for global events.

Today let’s share our perspective over the topic….Does the amending of logos for occasions add worth to a company‘s image or leaves adverse effects on it?

To help you (and myself, of course), I have listed the advantages and disadvantages of this trend below. Let’s see if we succeed coming up with a logical reason to jump on this bandwagon.

1) Advantages:

  • Your customers will consider you as an up-to-date organization
  • The new look will transmit a fresh and welcoming feel to the customers.
  • It will help you stand out prominently among your competitors with more customers approaching you.
  • It will let your customers know about your special discount offers/ services for the occasion.
  • It adds a global feel to your services and strengthens your position internationally.
  • Shows your respect and care for your clients.

2) Disadvantages:

  • Your logo can lose its familiarity
  • Your regular customers start missing the original logo
  • The amended logo can confuse your customers
  • If the changes you add to the logo are not appealing, it will leave a bad impression on your customers.
  • Unpleasant changes in your logo will make you sound insensitive and unprofessional.

Your replies are must so I could decide if I should redecorate my blog logo for the shortly arriving Christmas…no time to waste guys, I need your suggestions ;)

I really seeing websites and logos dressed up for different occasions, and most people I know to like them too. It shows a light fun side, and a willingness to entertain your audience just that extra little bit.

I think it s a good idea, just like putting up the christmas lights, except this one doesn’t increase your power bill.

In my personal opinion, it is okay to change the logo to fit a popular occasion. It shows the website is:
    1. still alive (although no update on the contents whatsoever)
    2. aware of current events

It is however, important to do it just not-over-the top changes. :D

This is a fun way to keep customers interested in your business. If done correctly by a professional logo artist your brand will retain its familiarity without confusing your customers. Google and Yahoo are prime examples of revamping logos for occations without confusing their audience. The benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Just remember to choose a logo artist with experience.

I love how logos are changed for the seasons. Google is the master of it, but companies have been doing this for as long as I can remember. Not that Google needs the traffic, but I know that I’d visit the page normally just to see what neat stuff they’ve done with their logo lately. It keeps people interested. We live in an A.D.D. society – you can stay fresh or get stale.

Adapting your logo to the various holidays is a good idea, as long as your logo (identity) is solid and well known to the masses. These updated logos will be confusing to all the people who don’t know the original logos.

For well recognized powerhouses like Google and Yahoo, it’s a clever idea. Their brand is too well known to be forgotten or confused so easily. Besides that, the “decorative” logo versions are only used in their online presence to the general public, not in business communications (signage, business cards), where the professional consistency is a must. The general public would definitely recognize and appreciate the human touch, and in Google’s case, the opportunity to virtually “celebrate” both small and major events.

Agreed though that some of the seasonal decorations are a bit tacky (like adding a santa cap is a bit too simple and gimmicky), but I have found that Google’s are always interesting in their rendering :)
