    Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day: the Search Engine Style

    Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement in the United States have almost become synonymous terms. His efforts for eradicating racial discrimination from the US federal and state laws have been commended on all platforms, by entities, institutions, organizations, governments and people. As a result of his struggle and work, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed every year to commemorate his efforts and to remind the world about his message of equality and justice.

    Our search engines, like their tradition, depicted the spirit of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day in varied ways. Among them, some big names in search engines displayed the following logos/images on this special occasion.

    Note: Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed as a holiday every year in the United States on the third Monday of January, around the time of King’s birthday. It is one of the four US federal holidays to honor an individual.

    Martin Luther King Jr. was the lead spokesman of the nonviolent civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s in the United States. He was assassinated in 1968.

    LogoBlog Poll 16 - Will logos ever become extinct?

    Logo is one the most important elements of the brand identity of any company. It is the image of a company’s service or its product. It is also the level of quality or the experience one had with a particular brand. In the ancient times, logo designs were merely used as initial letters to represent a person or place for use on stationary or signs. Later, their importance grew to such an extent that they were then used as trademarks by merchants and then became corporate identities for organizations in order to accomplish marketing, branding and identity goals in the market.

    In the same regard, LogoBlog tested the fervor of its visitors and readers with a poll question recently. We asked our readers if logos will ever become extinct.

    According to the results, 12% of Logoblog visitors think that logos will get extinct in the future while 5% are uncertain. There is also a bunch of people (3% of total poll results) who had no idea about the question! (Welcome to the world of ignorance!)

    Most importantly (and to my content…) 80% of the audience voted that logos will never become extinct. (Thank you very much!)

    The results show that logos will never lose their value and significance in the coming time. Alongside the brand or entity’s name or in the exact form of it, there would always be an image in the name of a ‘logo’. Many cheers to the ever-evolving LOGO!

    6 Things to look for in a Logo Designer

    When a potential client enters the logo design market in search of a logo designer or a firm, which can offer impressive yet affordable logo design(s), s/he might experience a lot of confusion and vacillation. No doubt, the search for a logo designer is very difficult due to high saturation in the market and thus needs utmost scrutiny.

    In order to facilitate people for this search cum scrutiny, we provide the following pre-requisites one should look for during their hunt for a perfect logo designer.

    1. Talent and Ability:

    The primary element to look for in a logo designer is his/her talent and abilities. A good designer must be equipped with creative talent and excellent designing abilities that would enable him/her to produce artistic logo designs for their clientèle.

    2. Portfolio:

    While choosing a logo designer, a good way to judge his professional expertise is to check out the designer’s portfolio. Many professional designers and agencies have their portfolio published on websites, creative journals and magazines, and books. Some entities and individuals even display their work in exhibitions.

    Portfolio is one of the most important pieces of evidence from which you can conclude the logo designers’ command on his work and his understanding of the design world.

    3. Confidence:

    A good logo designer is someone who has confidence in his/her own creation. If a designer cannot stand for and like what s/he has created, no wonder it will be difficult for you to accept and adapt the concept. Thus, it is imperative for a logo designer to be confident about the quality of work, intensity of the task and the final product.

    4. Originality:

    A good logo designer must have originality in his/her work. Such a designer will work on the work motto “to create designs based on one’s own thoughts, ideas and enquires”.

    5. Attitude:

    Attitude is very important for logo designers as it attracts people towards the business. Even if you find one who is demanding and a total control freak, s/he should be decent, courteous and professionally respectful with you (client). Notice that keenly.

    6. Diversity:

    With the intention of creating quality and distinctive logo designs, a logo designer needs to embrace diversity in his/her work. If all of his/her work has the same elements, or is somewhat monotonous, then that will be a case of logo theft. A good designer will understand your (client’s) concept and requirements first and then try to create distinctive yet relevant logos.

    Search Engines celebrate Holidays

    For many years now, Google has customized its logo design in accordance with holidays, occasions, events and anniversaries. This trend was enthusiastically observed and largely appreciated. As a result, many websites and search engines followed course and started expressing their celebration mood in a communicative and graphical manner.

    As the holiday season approaches, different websites feature the elements of revelry, joy, festivities and fun in them in varied ways. However, the search engines displayed these elements in ways no one else did.

    Yahoo:

    Yahoo, in its signature Flash animated style, featured a snowman in one corner and gifts at the other, with Yahoo! in between as its holiday logo. Upon dragging the cursor to the logo, two children with a dog can be seen running towards the gifts. If you click the logo, Yahoo directs you to its Yahoo Events page where you can get recipes, shop, and do other activities related to holidays.

    Dogpile:

    Dogpile had a simple demonstration of holiday fever. It shows its mascot, the Dog, in Santa’s uniform with a bag of goodies, standing in front of a Christmas tree. On clicking the Dog, the search engine takes you to a web search of Christmas cards, which was the theme for this year.

    SE Roundtable:

    There isn’t much to describe SE Roundtable’s holiday logo, except that it is simple, significant and full of holiday spirit.

    Ask.com:

    Ask probably had the most intelligently designed interface. At the first glance, it seemed that Ask used a Flash animation in its background. But if looked closely, pretty smart html coding that transforms certain elements into an animation of falling snowflakes was used. A must see for everyone. But it didn’t work on IE 6, as the version doesn’t support it.
