“Smart Tactics” of Logo Designers to cover their Blunders!

Categories: freelance logo designers, Logo design, Logo Designers
Written By: Nora Reed

Over the years, I’ve written several posts about logo design clients who can be really annoying for logo designers. But today, I wish to discuss the other part of a client-designer relationship…I mean “logo designer’s side of story.” As we all know that an ideal relationship is a two-way process. Mostly, logo designers overvalue themselves, think they are always right and want their clients to always agree with them. Some designers even go to the extent of using clients as scapegoats for their mistakes. But are logo designers really smart as they think they are? Think again!

One of the worst habits of logo designers is overconfidence. I may sound a little harsh and crude at the moment, but my motive is merely to highlight the shortcomings of logo designers so they could work more on improving themselves.

Let’s read on which smart tactics logo designers usually use to cover their blunders from clients.

• “You said so…not my fault”

Obtaining a logo design brief from a client is said to be the starting point for any logo design project. But picture this scenario…you send over a brief questionnaire to your client and ask him to explain the basic layout of the required design. Now when you send him over the design, he asks for some changes….but you refuse. You comply telling the client that this is all he mentioned in the questionnaire and you will be sticking to his words. Instead of using your own imagination and creativity, you act stubbornly and follow the client word by word. Instead of asking for more details and using your design abilities, you completely refuse to take any responsibility.

• “It’s a Minimal Logo…the latest trend!”

Minimal designing is an art, true! But lately, some logo designers have taken this logo design trend for granted. This is one dodging tactics that logo designers resort often. When they cannot come up with something creative within the deadline, they frame anything as a minimal design. Is this really a smart approach to follow with clients? I fear not. If you think that you can outsmart your clients with this excuse, think again! Client will like a minimal design only if its clever and conveys true essence of client’s enterprise.

• I’ve worked with clients like "Apple"…

A true attribute of successful logo designers is modesty and humility. Famous logo designers never boast about their skills and creative work to their clients, their talent speaks for them. Some designers have a bad habit of overly bragging about their years of logo design experience and how much knowledge they have. They use this as a pretext to justify their viewpoint and impose their will on the clients. When clients try to rebut their ideas, they simply run them down by saying: “I know much better as I have been in this field from last so many years.”

• “I have experience of soooooooo many years…”

Another approach which most of the logo designers use to impress their present clients is by mentioning “big brands” as their previous clients. They go along saying they have contibuted in making of famous logos like Apple Logo, IBM Logo etc and thus can never be wrong. This know-it-all approach can irritate the clients badly. What logo designers underestimate here is that every client has a different and unique set of needs. What you design for Apple may not apply to another company identity.

In the end, I hope that my views did not inadvertently offend any logo designer. My aim was simply to make my friend logo designers realize that instead of hiding our blunders we should work more on improving ourselves J

Ha ha. It is true and funny. Being a designer you are servicing your client, so modesty and humbleness is very important rather than boasting a “know all” attitude.
