Reactions over Big Ten Logo Redesign

Categories: Logo design, logo design contests, Logo Designers, Redesigned logos
Written By: Nora Reed

A few weeks back, I reviewed Big Ten logo redesign on my blog. For those who haven’t come across that, here is a brief snippet of the whole story. College football fans in US must be definitely aware of the Big Ten Conference…the oldest and largest Division I College Athletic Association. The organization is popularly known for its hidden logo with the number “11” concealed between the words “Big Ten”, denoting 11 playing teams.

Public Reactions to Big Ten Logo Redesign:

With the inclusion of twelfth team this year, a logo redesign was beckoned. Following the launch of this new logo design, mixed comments have been circling the blogosphere, but mostly negative feedbacks have been pouring out. Different top blogs and news websites were flocked with lengthy comments…a handful of people liked the design while many had their reservations.

The Negative Ones:

Countless negative comments on various blogs and sites have been pouring out, showing that people are reluctant to accept the Big Ten logo redesign. This is not my opinion but the reactions and feedback of Big Ten fans shown below. Have a look at some of the reactions from Big Ten fans, mostly negative, which I managed to collect from different renowned blogs/sites:

1. Comment on huffingpost.com

I’m not capping on the Big 10—I respect all of the major conference¬s. BUT! This logo looks like the boss burst into the room and said, “Guys we need a new Big 10 logo. I’m briefing the big man in a half hour. I need the logo in 20 minutes! Now get to work!”

2. Comment on logodesignlove.com

It’s a shame they couldn’t find a negative space solution as the old logo. I can see what they have attempted with the 0/G play but for me it just doesn’t carry off, the second American college division to release a logo down grade after the PAC10 did earlier in the year.

3. Comment from underconsideration.com/brandnew

I am a little disappointed that this is a Pentagram mark. It is not bad, but it seems like the first solution a 4th year design student would have come up with. I would really like to know if there were smarter options that the client felt were too sophisticated for football fans.

4. Comment on brandchannel.com

I’m really not all that impressed. As one comment called out, "looks like it took 25 seconds to make", goes along with what I am thinking. Hope they didn’t pay too much for someone to make this!

5. Comment on huffingpost.com

Quite frankly, I’m appalled. The new logo is extremely unattractive, lacks any imagination, and has no representative clue to indicate that the conference now has 12 teams. In addition to this, they had to go and give uninspired names for the divisions. And as if THAT weren’t enough, we also get more trophies that, while nice, try to pay homage to too many players.

The Positive Ones:

While there are plenty of negative responses on the Big Ten redesign, I have come across only a handful of positive feedbacks.

1. Comment on logodesignlove.com

At first glance, I was thinking… well that is boring. But it really is a simple solution. I think it works better in application than it does on its own. Ok, so the previous version incorporated the 11. That is good and all, but the type in this new version is much better. Although, I would love to see the process of how they got to this point.

2. Comment on underconsideration.com/brandnew

Very bold, and smart for collegiate sports. I really like the double reading of Big and Ten in one word. Thumbs up!

Big Ten Logo Redesign Contest:

Considering the fact that there have been more negative reactions than positive feedbacks, it seems like the public is not generally amazed with the new logo design. It is said that the previous Big Ten logo, which fans completely adore, also faced resistance when it was launched two decades back. But gradually, as we see, fans ended up loving it. This time, it has to be seen if Big Ten fans wholeheartedly accept the redesigned logo or insist the organization to revert back to old version (like Gap Logo). Following are some of the logos submitted on the contest at Mycroburst.com:

Sighting these negative reactions from the general public, Mycroburst.com has started an unofficial logo redesign contest, inviting the design community to redesign the Big Ten logo. The contest has already received nearly 700 entries by countless designers from all over the world. The prize money is $500 Guaranteed and there are still 2 weeks left, before the contest ends on 24th January 2010. This contest provides mass opportunities for graphic designers where you can reveal your designing talent to the world.

Update:

After receiving over 1000 entries, five of the best designs have been finalized for voting. Now is the time to decide which BIG TEN logo deserves to be the winner. Vote NOW .

  1. Gert van Duinen Says:

The unofficial contest actually doesn’t look very promising at all, when you take into account the entries given 5 stars. I think Big Ten better stick to its new one :P .

  2. Lisa Merriam Says:

Great idea to have a design contest, but I think the redesign still wins. There is no need to sneak in “12″ when no one references that number in the conference. The brand is Big Ten, period. You do highlight an interesting phenomenon–everyone always hates change.

  3. Raymond Zayas Says:

It is true everyone does hate change. I love the redesign. The twelve is irrelevant when the name of the conference is the big ten.

  4. Kris@bestmicrowaveoven Says:

I agree that the 12 does nothing but complicate the whole situation. I kinda like the redesign. At least more so than the original. I however like the bottom left one also if you lose the “12″. Interested in seeing what happens!
